The party finds themselves split in two groups on opposite sides of Berronar's Pyre. On the one side, Bigby struggles to hold Vargnin's summoned Bone Devil charmed. On the other, Aramil and Roderick study the flames trying to better understand them.

Bigby convinces his tenuous ally to use his Wall of Ice powers to build an ice bridge over the chasm. Though the flames melt it at an alarming rate, he is able to create a bridge that lasts long enough to get everybody across.

Once reunited, Pavo and Dru fall back to the room above the trap door to make sure nobody sneaks up on the group. Back in the cavern, Bigby reveals that his grasp on the Bone Devil is shaky and that they will have to take care of the creature using force. Roderick casts a protection from fire spell on Ursa, who then attempts to lure the devil to the edge of the chasm. The plan almost works, but the devil proves too clever to fall for Ursa's simple ruse.

A ferocious battle breaks out that saps the party's remaining spells. In the end, Bigby has been knocked unconscious and Ursa has been blasted with Berronar's Pyre, but the devil is destroyed and the party is safe.

The group falls back to the tunnel area and rests for the “night”. The next morning, they replenish their spells and Roderick casts a Divination to find out how they should proceed. Since the path to Einerk's tomb led down into the fire, he asks, “How do the seven of us safely pass through these flames to continue on the path towards Einerk's Tomb?”

Imhotep's answer provides little obvious help: “Do not fear the path of darkness. Even evil can sometimes be used for good.”

Realizing that a powerful lich may have spent 50 years studying the fire before finding a way to defeat it, the party settles into the realization that the conundrum of Berronar's Pyre may not be easily solved.

XP awarded: 725 for Aramil, Bigby, Kesi, and Roderick; 975 for Ursa. Ursa makes 11th level.
