Voyager20 - 24 October 2003 - Lost in the ether

Previous calendar:

  • Third Age, Year 1108
  • 22 May - The great council meeting; War is averted!
  • 23 May - Down the river with King Thor; Explore the palace;
  • Half of party goes through the Slaad's ethereal passwall.
I. The ether

The ethereal plane is a very unusual environment for the uninitiated. It has no gravity and very few solid objects. However, much of what is on the material plane is visible as if in shadow. It is, quite simply, the ideal vantage point from which to spy on people.

Since there is no solid ground and no gravity, moving around is accomplished by force of will. Since this kind of movement is unfamiliar to the characters, they will have to make a Will save vs. DC 15 every round or be unable to move. When they are able to move, they move at half speed.

The Slaad that has plagued King Thor's palace is at home on the ethereal plane and suffers no such impediment. In fact, his combat speed is 40' in this realm vs. 30' on the material plane.

Here are the rest of his combat stats:

This particular Slaad is different from the regular write-up as follows: The “Passwall” spell he casts at will is actually a ethereal version. The tunnel has one opening on the material plane, and another on the ethereal. With this, the Slaad can easily travel to and from these planes - and transport large objects or other creatures! It also has no summon ability. Finally, its attacks do less damage and are designed more for grabbing people and things in a hurry.

II. The real ghost in the palace

If the Slaad is defeated, an actual ghost will return to the palace. Since ghosts exist on both the material and ethereal planes, she will be aware of the party and encourage them to leave!

She is Anevay, the sister King Yateko, who ruled around 150 years ago. She attempted to murder her brother and usurp his throne, but was caught and executed. After her death, she began haunting the palace trying to get her brother killed. When Yateko died of natural causes many years later, Anevay went insane and has considered all kings since then to be villains who have taken HER THRONE!

After the palace is cleared of the Slaad, Anevay will return to the area and assume that the party is in league with the USURPERS! She will attack, with the intent to drive the party away. If they leave the palace area, there will be no pursuit.

III. The ride home

If Roderick casts Lesser Planar Ally, he will summon a Janni named Apenimon. He will be able to use his plane shift power to return the party to the material plane.
