Voyager12 - 25 April 2003 - The final storm cloud

Previous calendar:

  • Third Age, Year 1108
  • 3 Apr - Rescue of Abira
  • 4 Apr - Head into hills
  • 5 Apr - Bugbear ambush
  • 6 Apr - Tower at Dibe; Find Kendrick; Kill Slaad

0. point out my oversight re: the pedestals astride the front door

I. Cleanup at the tower

A) Roderick fixes Kendrick (will take several days). The basics of the healing will involve a series of Remove Curse spells. Normally, only one such spell is required to remove “all curses” on a person. However, due to the chaotic forces at play here, one spell will only be able to quash one curse at a time. There are a total of six distinct curses on Kendrick - some of which overlap effects. Once the first curse is lifted, the party will be able to communicate with the wizard, though it won't be easy.

    ...concurrent with...

B) Party learns more about Kendrick (including his name) from the detritus of the castle. Also, talk more about the loot. The main question, of course, is should the party take what they want - or wait until Kendrick is healed before negotiating with him.

II. Plan for the plains

Once Kendrick is healed, negotiate compensation for the party. (Kendrick will be very generous, but there are some items he cannot part with - namely his spellbook). He will also dispose of the chaos rock as soon as practical. Finally, Kendrick will fill the party in on what awaits them ahead in Etenai and Comani territory. He has information mostly on the nearest large tribe, known as the Hky-you-hay (KAI you hay), whose leader is named “Odin”. The next tribe beyond them are the Sibutco tribe, but has only general information.

The most important tidbit Kendrick can offer is a suggestion that the party travel across the plains to the Lake of Serpents - rather than down the river to the coast. The main reason for this is that the “barbarians” near the lake of Serpents are actually more civilized than the coastal dwellers - and have access to more resources (magical and otherwise). The area, in fact, is higher in magic than most of the “civilized” world.

More things Kendrick knows: Several of the runes on Kesi's staff - namely the Law, Chaos, and six elements. Others he can offer guesses, but suggests they may represent people or places he's not familiar with.

III. Showdown with Malila

As the party departs, the Rain King will arrive in a small storm cloud. The cloud will be clearly supernatural, but arrows and other attacks will likely have no effect. As it descends, the king's form will be seen in the center, and several(?) elementals will form on the edge. On landing, the king will scream his wife's name and a force field of rain will form around him, while the elementals attack. Nobody in the party will be able to penetrate this field - with the exception of Roget - and he will only be able to do it once he has called out to Matchitisiw. Spells: 0) Detect Magic (x2)

The rain is heavy and fast and it stings when it hits. Yet, almost as soon as it does, you become aroused. As the cloud descends, you feel a strange energy invigorating you… And you know her name…

<Game Voice> You may eliminate one more point of your CON loss - which, if I recall correctly, should return you to the +2 bonus level and restore your hit points to their natural level.

Roderick,

<DM Voice> A clarification… When I first introduced you to your “vision girl”, I described her as a “young woman”. However, in my mind, she was always a girl of perhaps twelve. Later, I realized from one of your comments that you imagined her as older than I did. So, I hereby retroactively assign her age at precisely 15ish. This makes her young enough that she fits my image, but still old enough to be considered a “woman” by a lecherous old man such as Roderick. In fact, there is a certain duality in her that confuses Roderick. She really does seem to be BOTH a young girl and a (very alluring) woman.

<Prophetic-Vision Voice> While the battle rages, you catch something in your peripheral vision. You turn to see the young girl you originally met in the dead village of Gressa. She looks up at you with a serious expression on her face and says, “If Roget needs help, you may give it. But only if he asks!” There is something terribly ominous about her voice. You feel frightened and a little embarrassed, as though you were being lectured by an elder.

Then she smiles. Just the slightest change of expression and you feel an immediate sense of relief. “Don't you just LOVE the rain?”, she asks, turning her head up into the sky.

Reflexively, you followe her gaze up into the sky. The rain is still pelting down so hard it actually HURTS. When you look back down - and you knew this even before you looked - she is gone.
