V3 Session Twenty-Three -- 11 June 2010 -- "On the Trail of the Puppetmaster"

(Previous Session) (Back to V3 Index) (Next Session)

Note: This adventure's encounter is a home-brew encounter using the Griffon's Nest Inn map from “Fantastic Locations: City of Peril”.

February, 1120

After losing three months on another plane of existence, the party finds themselves deep in the mountainous winter of Hammerfast. With no compelling reason to risk travel, they decide to hunker down until the spring thaw.

May, 1120

The Loremaster, Geld Seekingstone, has learned that the sigil the party found on two previous occasions (most recently on the map that brought them to Hammerfast) belongs to a merchant from Idus named Azêllay. In addition, he believes that Azêllay is known as “The Puppetmaster” (a name the goblins have been heard to use).

The party decides to head into the city of Idus to learn what they can (and possibly confront) Azêllay. On arrival, they spend a couple of days acclimating themselves to the politics of the region and learn that Azêllay lives in a fortress-like neighborhood deep inside the city.

When the party tries to walk into a market area controller by Azêllay, the city guards (who are likely on his payroll) insist they leave immediately. Imbo tries to convince them to pass a message in, but they won't even do that. Later that day, Imbo returns and enters the market area by himself, where he finds a merchant willing to take his message in to Azêllay.

In the wee hours of the morning, the party receives a response - but it is not what they hoped for. A squad of nearly a dozen city guard storm the inn where the party is sleeping. After a protracted battle, the guards are all killed or taken captive and the party decides that they have no other option by to strike at Azêllay immediately.
