Kevin Arcana

Wizard who was able to take control of the Twenty Portals after the magic changed in 1108.

On March 22, 1109, Kevin announced at the meeting of the Council of Wizards that anybody could use the portals by purchasing a one-use key gem from him or his representatives. At a “mere” 150 gold pieces, these gems were certain to revolutionize long-distance travel by the upper class.

Kevin Arcana's history is clouded in obscurity.1) Prior to his appearance at the council meeting in 1109, his only claim to fame was a long, bloody feud with the wizard Sethar. This feud involved the members of the King's Island Campaign – especially Katrina.

In 1126, a team of adventurers breeched Kevin's compound in Southern Rota and learned that Kevin's power came from the Demon King of Pain, Gkilarzza. The demon prince was defeated and Kevin killed. After this, with the monopoly on portal gems broken, the cost to use the portals dropped significantly and inter-kingdom trade spiked.

It should be pointed out that the name for this wizard comes from the 1985 edition of the “Fantasy Hero” rulebook – on page 155 under “Original Playtesters”. Thus, ignoring the possibility of a pseudonym, Kevin Arcana appears to be a real person in the real world. I apologize to this person – wherever he may be – if my use of his name makes him uncomfortable in any way
