Aladar

Member of the council of wizards whose specialty is the magic of life. He has carried out numerous experiments in his past which have had adverse effects on his subjects. He altered Neville's mind, giving him tremendous innate psychic shields, but at the cost of his intelligence. In 1102, he successfully grew Erin, the first of his four artificial children, but when his experimental children came with the unexpected side-effect of rapid aging, he abandoned his research and has devoted all of his efforts into reversing their aging process. He lives on an island off the coast of Pleven and recently has made efforts to recolonize it.

Immortal high elf that owns the sword that Rana found in 1092. After the quest to retrieve the gem of Corellon in 1093, Rana handed back the sword.

The Master Summoner

(aka “Claira” or “Mary”) - Gifted sorceress whose specialty is extra-planar summonings. Born in Lowland in 1028, she accidentally summoned one of Parádoxa's servants at the age of 18 and commanded it to grant her the power to travel in time. After learning of the destruction of her beloved homeland at the hands of Pelham, she created a paradox by travelling to 1090, summoning Lord Ozzie from 1106 and having him kill Pelham. Parádoxa intervened and stripped her of her powers and her memories. Years later, in 1104, she met Lord Ozzie again and in 1106 he helped restore her memories (though not her time travel powers).

The Dark Mage

The ultimate bad guy. Now very dead. He was born in the first age, approximately four thousand years ago and has resurfaced to cause the downfall of civilization at least three times. Some scholars suggest that he is a minion of the gods and is sent back to disrupt the world when the mortals have gotten out of hand. This theory, though, is not widely accepted and doesn't seem to fit with the historical record well. The Mage's birth name was Nakam Alkat and his origins are mostly unknown. Legend has it that he was the only mortal to touch the great heaven spire and live.

The Demonwraiths

Twelve creatures of undead who were originally the Dark Mage's mortal servants in the second age. They led the mage's armies against Backbone and Pleven and were defeated with him in 1105.

The Disks of Odin

Three small ivory disks inscribed with the symbols of Frigga, Sif, and Thor. Each disk has a different power: Frigga = Knowledge, Sif = Transport, Thor = Strength. In conjunction with the Eye of Odin, these disks are extremely powerful. Currently held by Cale and Strachan.

Duncan

Pacifist who came along with Shale, Starhawk, Top, and Syl when they unknowingly helped Pelham free himself of the Dark Mage's curse.

Edric (city)

Capital city of Backbone and seat of Queen Rathwyn's throne. Named in honor of Backbone's premier mage, Edric.

Edric (man)

Originally wizard to King Scardore of Backbone, later archmage of the council of wizards. Helped the Good Party in their battles with the Dark Mage. Killed by the Dark Mage in December, 1104.

Elsa

Archmage before Edric. She was an extremely skilled mage and actually taught both Edric and Sardul when they were journeymen spellcasters. She had a close association with the elves and developed the Longlife spell that both Edric and Sardul eventually used to extend their lives. She was killed by the Dark Mage (using Solgar) in 1098.

The Engineer

Co-pilot of exploratory spacecraft from Earth that crashed on this world (see The Captain). Now has the innate magical ability to create finely worked objects. Has dedicated his time to building large, noisy machines which can transport men through the air.

Erin

An artificially grown human who has no mother and only the bio-wizard Aladar as a father. She has innate powers of song and can destroy evil with her scream. Unfortunately, she ages at a rapid rate and is expected to die of old age probably before she is 30.

The Eye of Odin

Magical amplifier. Works with most any spell or magic item, but is designed to amplify the three disks of Odin. See entries for Cale and Strachan.

Galin, King

Son of Queen Carina II of Rota. Assumed the throne on her death in 1097 at the age of nine and is still sometimes called “the boy king”, even though he is now twenty years old.

The Gem of Corellon

A powerful crystal which can house the souls of elves. it was created by the elf god Corellon at the end of the first age to save the elves from the destruction that was brought about when the terran gods removed magic from the world. Later, it was stolen by Gruumsh and played an integral part in the final days of the second age. Recovered by Karelia and Rana in 1093. Now in the possession of Corellon.

Gkilarrza, Demon king of pain

Servant to the orc gods. Wielder of one of two evil swords which are counter to two goods swords that Karelia and Rana found in 1092. See also Kalagúrth.

Godslayer

A tremendously powerful psychic entity. Believed to have existed on Earth either many thousands or many millions of years ago. It was released from an ancient prison sometime in the 25th century Earth time and was chased away by the technology might of the humans. It warped to the twenty worlds, taking the spaceship Aquila with it. When it arrived, it took over a world adjacent to this one and killed the entire family of Sumerian gods. It was apparently killed when Lord Ozzie drained the elemental energies in January, 1108.

The Great Map

Another artifact from the first age, this is a magical map which will show the location of whatever its key gem is tuned to find. Known key gems are the gem of the portals and the gem of the weapons. A legendary gem of the gems has never been known to exist. It can be broken by its owner, at which point it scatters its pieces throughout the world(s) and temporarily disrupts (but never destroys) the ninety-nine portals.

Greyhawk

An adjacent world. Very similar, but somewhat richer in magic.

Griswold Gildersleeve

Prominent mage on Lendore island. Slain by the Dark Mage and turned into a storm tower zombie in 1104.

Hades

Greek god of the underworld. It is believed that Hades has gradually developed an insanity over the past few thousand years. After his role in the Dark Mage's return was revealed, he was banished by his peers deep into his realm and stripped of most of his power.

Imix

Immenri

The real name for the Northern continent. Only used by scholars and weirdos.

Kalagurth, Enchanter of Death

Another sword-wielding demon who serves the orc gods. He is a masterful shape changer.

Karelia

Player Character (Pete Norton). Female half-elven sword-swinger trained by the druids of Marshard. Played a supporting role in the defeat of the Dark Mage (among other things). Now researching voice magic (a form of mana-based magic).

Katrina

Player Character (Martin Perlot). The imperious “ice-queen” of the King's Island. Founded a small, but growing, community and dubbed it Port Rathwyn. Tangled in the emerging politics of the new Backbone.

Kelva, the sword of command

One of the three racial weapons given to the mortals at the beginning of time (along with Rûklil and Mancu Rilmaeg). This sword was given to the humans and is now held by King Norwood of Lendore. It has the power to make others do the bidding of the wielder and is easily the most powerful of the three.

Kost

(aka Kostchtchie) - A demon lord who has craved the great map since the first age. Killed by the Good Party late in 1104.

Kragnor

A great and powerful dragon whose aid Sardul enlisted to defeat Edric in 1090. Instead, the mage chased the dragon back into the hills from which it has not emerged since.

Kwalish's Great Transport

A time machine invented by the time-mage Kwalish early in the second age. It made one trip through time, stopping at a number of points before returning to its origin, where it was destroyed by Parádoxa.

Mancu Rilmaeg

Another of the three racial weapons (see Kelva). This bow was given to the elves and is now held by Tarialaî Thoranna.

Melchar

Psionicist who gathered the ten artifacts of Aurén Ilay together several decades ago. He deliberately killed himself so that his soul would be safely stored in the artifacts and his enemies would not find him. Before he was able to step out of the artifacts, though, they were scattered and not reassembled until 1093. His overly ambitious grand-daughter, Elarion, tried to gather them in 1090 and drew the attention of the Good Party. When she tried to have them killed, they stormed her castle. She died in the resulting battle and the Good Party found the clue that she had uncovered.

Midore

Second largest island in the Spindrift chain. Currently ruled by Governor Baird.

Minas Moriant

Ancient tower from the first or second age. Now partially submerged in the dark bay. Lord Ozzie used this tower's magical properties to travel to the adjacent world of Xotei.

Nakam Alkat

The good half of the Dark Mage, created when Lord Ozzie dumped a jar of Deva essence on the evil mage. Later killed by the Dark Mage, but revived after the wars ended. When Nakam began to lose his sanity and feared he would slip back to his evil self, he set an elaborate trap for himself, using the heroes to carry out his own suicide.

Neville

Faithful, but stupid, companion to Wizard. After some rather unorthodox experimentation by Aladar, Neville's intelligence was radically diminished. However, his resulting psyche was strong enough to resist the Godslayer's psychic assault in 1104. Neville was left quite insane, though, when everybody around him dropped dead. He is thought to be dead.

N'galt

The actual name for the Eastern continent.

Norwood, King

Norwood lived for five years as a slave to a dryad. When he was released, he found his home and job gone. He joined forces with Karelia to find the Eye of Odin. In the process, he found Kelva and now rules Lendore island with it.

Ozzie

Player Character (Chris Bezodis). Male Half-orc. Member of the Good Party. I've thoroughly examined him and he's not only merely dead, he's really most sincerely dead. And doesn't get to shoot.

Parádoxa

Time Lord. Master of paradoxes. His job is to make sure that the time stream flows in an orderly fashion. Not an easy job when pesky mortals keep popping about in time.

Pelham

Member of the council of wizards whose specialty is psionic magic. Originally, Pelham was called “the quiet wizard” because he rarely spoke. Now, it is known that Pelham's reputation was only what he wanted it to be. For years, people feared him because they thought he was undead, even though he wasn't. Ironically, the Dark Mage converted him into a storm tower zombie in 1098 and he became a true undead. He was released from this curse in 1107. Current whereabouts unknown.

Pleven

The name for the elven city and the forests east of Lowland. Now populated by orcs.

Qôc Lômé

Orc high priest. Led the invasion of Larinday in 1093. For a brief time, held the sword of Kalagúrth.

Now married to Sly and living on a small island of the northeastern coast of Lendore isle. Has seven children (six boys and one girl) ranging in ages from newborn up to 13.

Rathwyn

A daughter of a priest to Bast in Backbone. Orphaned by the war with Lowland in 1091 and adopted by Sorgul who began to teach her some magics. When Sorgul was converted to evil in 1093, she began a quest to restore him. With Edric's and Sly's help, she completed her quest in May, 1104. She took the responsibility to wield the Good Trio of Might when they were recovered and is now self-proclaimed Queen of Backbone.

Reglet

Member of the council of wizards whose specialty was architectural magic. He manufactured an entire castle out of very light weight wood and strengthened it with magic so that it was stronger than stone, then enchanted it with the power of flight and lived among the clouds. When the magic changed, his castle fell. Though he was not injured in the crash, he still died two months later.

Resh

The dead lands. Once a thriving, self-sufficient society that worshipped the Sumerian gods who were slain by the Godslayer. Now, the entire culture is destroyed.

Rota

Norse culture on the western coast of the eastern continent. Ruled by King Galin, the boy king.

Rûklil

Another of the three racial weapons (see Kelva). This axe was given to the dwarves and is now held by Wacarnelian (“Wak”) Medibeard.

Sandra Middleham

Member of the council of wizards whose specialties are psionics and time. She has precognitive powers and successfully warned the people of Rota before the Dark Mage invaded their city.

Sardul(a)

Original nemesis to Edric. His soul was trapped in Edric's body in 1091 and released into the ten artifacts of Aurén Ilay in 1093. Edric tried to destroy the ten, but could not retrieve the Tiara of Queen Zosia, which had fallen into Pelham's hands. Pelham then tricked some adventurers into stealing the Helm of Demarest from Sorgul's castle in 1106. Then, a trap was set at Sly's castle to bring the two together with the Gem of Zandra so that Sardul could be released. Pelham then had Sardul taken back to Lowland where he performed some psychic surgery to reshape Sardul's mind into that of a woman (to match the new body he/she had). This was all done to impress the council of wizards (which was successful). Sardula was slain later that year while defending Pelham's castle from a group of adventurers.

Scardore

King of Backbone before and during the wars. Killed by the Demonwraiths in 1098.

The Scepters (Dark Mage's and the Demonwraiths')

The Dark Mage crafted a group of magical scepters in the second age. One for himself and one for each of his Demonwraiths. They are an integral part of the creatures souls and if parted from their scepters, they are weakened. The Dark Mage's scepter is the master scepter and when it was destroyed by the Good Party in 1104, the other twelve scepters also discorporated. This event caused the Dark Mage to quest for the evil Trio of Might.

The Sea of Sand

A vast desert in the center of the main continent. In both the first and the second ages, this area was the center of civilization in the world. After the meteor strike that ended the second age, though, the climate changed and the area became a desert. Descendants of the original Arral empire remain in the area, but have devolved into a nomadic lifestyle.

The Shadowlord

The supreme ruler of the elemental world. He has always had dreams of control, but could never face up to the combined might of the Lords of Light and Darkness, who traditionally have both had a desire to keep him subdued. Now, the lords are either slain or fighting for their lives. No one is quite sure what is happening on the elemental world.

Shale

Player Character (Valerie Seymour). Female psionicist from Sabit. Lives in Sorgul's commune and is studying the source of her powers.

Shea

One of the super-powered people rescued by the Good Party from the nine hells in 1105. See Tillinghast for more details.

Sly

Player Character (Brian Bishop). Male Half-elf. Member of the Good Party. Helped retrieve the ten artifacts of Aurén Ilay and defeat the Dark Mage in 1105. Now is married to Rana and is a rather prominent member of the community on the northeastern corner of Lendore Island.

Solgar

Evil counterpart to Sorgul created by Hades in 1093. Solgar was the host for the Dark Mage from the years 1093 to 1098 and was imprisoned in a dimensionless void from 1100 to 1104. Destroyed in 1104 by Rathwyn when she revived Sorgul.

Sorgul

Player Character (Roy Guisinger). Male half-elf. Member of the Good Party. Instrumental in both the quest for the ten artifacts of Aurén Ilay and in the defeat of the Dark Mage. Now living in Edric's castle to the north of Rota. Has established a commune devoted to the study of the new magic.

Southlands

Country far to the south of the main continent. Ruled by settlers from Backbone and Lowland, who arrived around 150 years ago. A strict racial-based class hierarchy keeps the original (primative) tribal culture in check - though there is an almost constant threat of revolt simmering just below the surface. The ruling class are governed by King Erle II (who, in the past, paid ceremonial allegiance to the king of Backbone). The native (servant) class is governed by the priestess Manda, who relies on frequent human sacrifices to appease their gods.

Spindrift

Island chain in between the three continents. Made up of (in decreasing order by size) Lendore, Midore, Aldore, and Marshard islands. Numerous other smaller islands extend the chain north. The last of which is Sabit.

Starhawk

Player Character (Helen Umberger). Originally, she was a servant to Pelham during his darker years. When she questioned his authority once, he tested his new mind transformation spell on her and gave her a completely new sense of reality, complete with an artificial native language and devout belief in a non-existent god. She sincerely believed she was from another world. To test the long term effects of his spell he then let her go out into the world where she met Shale, Top, and Syl and eventually returned to Pelham, bringing with her the magical crystals he needed to rid himself of the Dark Mage's curse.

Storm Cloud

A veil of psychic energy which shielded the land below from the sunlight, but let the moon light through without hindrance. This cloud was originally an unexpected by-product of the tremendous carnage at the end of the second age and was drawn down to Lowland by Pelham in 1093. In 1104, it was brought down by the Good Party and has since drifted away from Lowland and fixed itself over the ruined capital city of Resh.

The Storm Crystals

An oblong crystal the was implanted in the forehead of its victim. It stretched from the top of the head to the bridge of the nose, withered the host body into a state of undead, and could not be removed without destroying the host (with Pelham being the sole exception).

The Storm Towers

These towers are the greatest remaining legacy of the Dark Mage wars. Some were constructed in secret, others by deception, but they all served one purpose: To house a storm tower zombie who would hold a storm crystal in his forehead and be a local host to the ever expanding storm cloud.

Storm Tower Zombies

A person who is killed by a storm crystal and placed in a storm tower to act as a host for the storm cloud in a local region. The host must be a prominent person who is familiar with the region of the storm tower. Several impressive peoples fell to the curse of the storm towers, including Elsa, Scardore, Lamar, Pelham, Griswold Gildersleeve, and many others. All of the storm tower zombies were destroyed (and thus freed of their curse) when Pelham's minions collected the crystals from around the world in order to rid him of the curse.

Strachan

Champion to King Galin of Rota. Holder of the Disk of Thor which grants him incredible strength.

Syl

Player Character (Dave Smith). Grew up as a thief, but lately has taken a dislike to the profession after he pilfered some stuff from Pelham's castle.

Tacey

Wife of Edric. Originally from Lowland, she represented an important tie between the two countries. She was a priestess to Aphrodite and was slain by a Demonwraith in 1104.

Tarialaî Thoranna

Wielder of the elven bow, Mancu Rilmaeg. Has been on a quest to find the missing elves since she helped defeat the Dark Mage in 1105.

Thentao

The ancient name for the main continent.

Throne of Ilay

A magical place far up in the mountains from Lowland where a devout person may talk directly with the gods. Karelia used this throne to return the gem to Corellon.

Tillinghast

A servant to the Good Party who accompanied them in 1104 into the Nine Hells where he was slain. They returned after the defeat of the Dark Mage to free his soul. He is now imbued with incredible powers and works actively to fight evil worldwide.

Timrik Longrun

Illusionist who helped Uith take over Spindrift. When the half-orc later turned against him, Timrik sided with The Good Party to bring about Uith's defeat.

Top

Player Character (Ken Millard). Helped hand over the crystals to Pelham that he needed to rid himself of the Dark Mage's curse.

The Trios of Might (Good and Evil)

The Evil Trio was taken by the gods when the Dark Mage was defeated. The Good Trio is still in the possession of Queen Rathwyn. These consist of a crown, scepter, and orb with fantastic powers.

Uith

(pronounce HWEET) - Half-orc assassin who took over the Spindrift Island chain with the help of the illusionist Timrik Longrun. Current whereabouts unknown, though he is believed to still be alive.

Wacarnelian Medibeard

(aka “Wak”) - Dwarf champion to King Clandig IV. Wielder of the axe, Rûklil.

Wassom

One of the super-powered people rescued by the Good Party from the nine hells in 1105. See Tillinghast for more details.

Wizard

Player Character (Ron Whittle). Master Illusionist. Later in life, he began to learn the ancient skills of Rune Magic, but was accidently sucked through a portal in 1107. Current whereabouts and status unknown.

Xotei

Adjacent world. Has a very high magic level. Lord Ozzie travelled there and reported that every person was a wizard in some way.
